Weekly Meditation Classes
About Our Classes
Our introductory classes are designed to give a broad introduction to Buddhist meditation, ideas and practice. The classes combine guided meditation with practical spiritual advice that you can immediately put into practice as a method for eliminating daily stress and other problems you may be experiencing.
The classes are open to everyone, you don't need to book, you can just turn up as and when you wish.
Meditation is a method for making our mind calm and peaceful. When our mind is peaceful we are free from worries and mental discomfort, and are able to experience happiness that arises from our own inner peace.
If we train our mind to become peaceful we shall be happy all the time, even in the most difficult circumstances. If our mind is not peaceful, even if we have the most pleasant external conditions we will find it difficult to be really happy
What to Expect at a Class
Our evening classes (General Programme) include two guided meditations a talk by the teacher on the subject for that week, questions and answers, and finally tea and biscuits.
The meditations are suitable for both complete beginners and those who have more experience.
Frequently Asked Questions
These are the most common questions about our weekly meditation classes.
Q: What are the weekly classes about?
A: Weekly classes cover all the essential ideas in Buddhism in a simple, structured and down-to-earth way, and enable us to learn how to meditate and then make steady progress in training our mind to become more peaceful.
Q: Do I need to be Buddhist to attend a weekly class?
A: No. We try to present Buddha’s teachings in a way that is accessible to everyone.
Q: Do I need to have experience of meditation or Buddhism to attend a weekly class?
A: No. Everyone is welcome, especially beginners.
Q: If I’m a complete beginner, should I attend a weekly class or a weekend event?
A: Either is fine; it really depends on your own circumstances and preference. Weekly classes are shorter and the groups are smaller, whereas weekend events attract larger audiences and take place over a whole day or half day.
Q: Which weekly class is suitable for someone with some experience of meditation?
A: The teachings are designed to be simple yet profound, so that every class provides something for everyone.
Q: What should I expect at a weekly class?
A: The classes begin with a relaxing meditation. Then there will be a talk covering the basics of meditation and Buddhism, emphasising how these can be applied to daily life. Finally, there is a second meditation and questions-and-answers. The classes conclude with tea/coffee & biscuits and an opportunity to get to know people informally.
Q: Will I be asked to say anything, or speak in front of a group of people?
A: No. But you can ask questions if you want to.
Q: Is there any physical exercise involved, such as yoga?
A: No. The courses focus on meditation alone and seating is in chairs.
Q: What do I need to bring?
A: Nothing in particular. However, some people find it useful to bring a notepad and pen.
Q: How should I dress?
A: There are no special requirements, but comfortable clothing is generally best.
Q: If I want to attend a weekly class, do I need to wait for the next course of classes to begin?
A: No. Each class is self-contained. You can drop in whenever you can, and start whenever you like.
Q: Do I need to book in advance?
A: For weekly classes it is not necessary to book in advance.
